Understanding Strep Throat: What You Need to Know

Updated: May 9

Classic symptoms: sudden sore throat, fever, fatigue, headache, abdominal pain

At some point, most of us have experienced the discomfort of a sore throat. However, it's essential to recognize that throat pain can stem from various causes—ranging from the common cold and flu to COVID-19 and seasonal allergies. One specific condition to be aware of is strep throat, a bacterial infection that often emerges in late autumn, winter, or early spring. Understanding the signs and symptoms of strep throat can help you make informed decisions about your health.

Strep throat, also known as pharyngitis, accounts for millions of outpatient visits each year in the U.S., particularly among people under 65. It accounts for nearly 2.8 million antibiotic prescriptions annually, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Group A strep pharyngitis typically peaks in winter and spring, making this an important topic to discuss.

What is Strep Throat?

Strep throat is caused by a specific bacterium called Group A Streptococcus. Unlike most sore throats that are viral, this bacterial infection presents with distinct symptoms. If you’ve been exposed to strep throat or are experiencing discomfort, common signs include:

·       A sudden sore throat

·       Fever

·       Fatigue

·       Headaches

·       Abdominal pain

You may also notice redness in your throat and possibly white patches or streaks around your tonsils. In more severe cases, swelling in your neck glands may occur.

Key Differences: Strep vs. Viral Infection

One helpful distinction to remember is that strep throat typically does not present with a cough. If you have a sore throat with a cough, it is likely a viral infection rather than strep. Strep throat affects only the upper respiratory tract, so persistent coughing may indicate another cause.

Highly Contagious, But Manageable

Strep throat is highly contagious, meaning it can spread easily, especially in the days before symptoms appear. The bacteria are transmitted through respiratory droplets, so good hygiene practices—like handwashing and covering your mouth when coughing or sneezing—are crucial. If you suspect that you or a family member may have strep throat, don’t hesitate to reach out for assistance. Our clinic is here to help!

Testing for Strep Throat

To confirm a strep throat diagnosis, we utilize two common tests. The rapid antigen test is a simple swab of the back of your throat that can provide results during your clinic visit in about 15 minutes. A more advanced option is the rapid molecular test, which offers highly accurate results. If needed, we may perform a throat culture as a follow-up to check for bacterial growth. The tests are quick and straightforward, ensuring that you receive the necessary care without delay.

Recovery and Treatment

Recovery from strep throat typically occurs within five to seven days with appropriate antibiotics, like amoxicillin or penicillin. It’s essential to complete the entire course, typically 10 days, to ensure the infection is fully cleared. You’ll generally be considered non-contagious within 24 to 48 hours of starting antibiotics, but it’s best to wait until you feel significantly better before returning to your daily activities.

A sore throat should not have to be a guessing game.
